This unit covers historical background and techniques used by neuroscience, the basics of development of the nervous system, the major structures of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous systems, and the anatomy and function of the cerebral cortex in greater detail. No prior knowledge is assumed aside from basic biology.

Chapter 1: History and techniques

Neuroscience as a discipline has been around for a little over a century - this chapter takes a look at some of the people and techniques who have shaped it into its current form. Provides an overview of the ways that scientists approach the nervous system, including neuroanatomy, tracers, electrophysiology, brain scanning and more.

Chapter 2: Development

A fascinating aspect of the nervous system is how the complex structures of the brain and spinal cord arise from a simple tube of cells in the embryo. This chapter looks at the genetic and chemical signalling which creates the nervous system, explaining the organisation of the major structures.

Chapter 3: Structures of the Brain

The brain is a very complex thing, no doubt about it, but by breaking its structures down in an organised way, the major anatomy is explained in this module. Learn the anatomy and functions of the cerebral cortex, thalamus, hippocampus, brainstem, cranial nerves and many more key structures.

Chapter 4: Spinal cord and peripheral nervous system

Less glamorous than the brain, but equally as important for life and survival, the spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system knit the functions of the body together and coordinate reflexes, movements and the control of many vital functions. Learn how these things are done and a little about how your body responds to stress.

Chapter 5: The cerebral cortex

A more detailed look at this complicated structure, which enables the processes of thought, memory and reasoning. Learn how the functions of the cortex are divided into regions, how our lifetime of knowledge and memory is encoded into the physical structure of the brain, and how we use it to combine information and knowledge in uniquely human ways.
